Perhaps one of the largest markets is Nanjing Dong Lu Market. Here you will have the opportunity to mingle through more than 600 stores offering absolutely anything you could possibly want to purchase. Yuyuan Tourist Trade City sells all kinds of souvenirs in its hundreds of specialty shops. Many outsiders refer to Shanghai as “Shopping Paradise” or “Oriental Paris” due to the fact that it is China’s largest commercial city. Here's a small sample of items you'll find in Shanghai, China:

Shanghai, China Shopping Tips:
  • Many of the vendors accept major credit cards but it is highly recommended that you keep a small amount of Hong Kong Currency for small spur-of-the-moment purchases.
  • Bartering is a common practice in the Hong Kong markets.

Chinese Yuan is the official legal currency. Most tourist hotels will accept major credit cards (with a 4% processing charge) such as Visa, Amex, MasterCard, Diners and JCB, as will banks, upper-end restaurants and tourist-related shops. Automated teller machines (ATMs) can be found almost everywhere and some HSBC 'Electronic Money' machines provide 24-hour cash withdrawal facilities for Visa and MasterCard holders. Traveller's cheques are accepted by leading banks and hotels.
