  • Plaza Indepencia
    Plaza Indepencia is anchored by a monument of national hero Jose Gervasio Artigas. Artigas led the battle for independence against Spain and was the first statesman of the Rio de la Plata Revolution. Citadel's Gate was part of an elaborate defense system in old Montevideo. Palacio Salvo was once the tallest building in South America and overlooks over the square.
  • Etchegagaray House
    The Etchegagaray House is an historic, three-story, French-style mansion built in 1925. It houses a collection of art and antiques, but the architecture and interior design alone is worth the visit. Some of the interior features include Italian marble, Bohemian crystal chandeliers, and a German Bluthner piano.
  • Plaza Constitucion
    Plaza Constitucion is the main square located in the "Ciudad Viejo" or "Old City" area. It is home to a weekly flea market. El Cabildo is the old town hall that once served as the city's jailhouse in the 19th century. Now it’s a museum that holds the city's historic archives, maps, photos, antiques, costumes, and artwork.
