Vancouver Restaurant Guide

Without question, Vancouver is one of the loveliest cities in the world, with acres of forested green in Stanley Park among her other enchanting features. Here, you can experience Asian, French, and California influenced cuisine, and enjoy some unusual ethnic blends to even include a hot dog ala Asian. Seafood and fresh produce are also big hits in this town. For an opportunity to explore Vancouver's rich heritage and dine out in style, stroll about old Gastown! Considered to be the oldest part of Vancouver, Gastown was once just a simple saloon established in 1867 by seaman/entrepreneur "Gassy" Jack Deighton. Vancouver is surely a treat to the senses... including taste!

Popular Restaurants in Vancouver:

Joe Fortes Seafood and Chophouse has been a Vancouver favorite for seafood and other delights for over 20 years. Open Mondays through Fridays for lunch from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, seven days a week for supper from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, you'll find a nice oyster bar, and an extensive selection of appetizers, main courses, and desserts. Beef Carpaccio, Poached Tiger Prawns, Crab Cakes, and Fried Oysters number among the starters which range from 5 to C$ 17. Lunch and supper menus include grilled fish and shellfish, Halibut and Chips, Sablefish, Steak Dianne, fish cakes, lobster, and mussels ranging in price from 22 to C$50. Sandwich fare at lunch, such as burgers and Oyster Po Boys, cost from 18 to C$24. This restaurant may offer "Early Bird" supper specials, which are 3 courses of entrees from a "you choose" type menu for around C$29 per person from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. This restaurant, located at 777 Thurlow at Robson, accepts major credit cards. You can contact them for reservations at 604-669-1940, or visit http://www.joefortes.ca/menus/menus.php?pageID=7.

Hapa Izakaya has three different locations in Vancouver (1479 Robson, 1516 Yew, and 1193 Hamilton). For your purposes from the cruise terminal, the Hamilton address may well be the one NOT to try because of distance. That said, these restaurants offer Cold Tapas (including Edamame, Kimchi, and Beef Tataki), and a small but good selection of sashimi, salads, Rice and Noodle dishes, and hot tapas at very reasonable prices. While some selections are at current market prices, you can select entrees at less than 10 C$ each. Hours open are from 5:00 PM to Midnight Sundays through Thursdays, and from 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. You can contact them as follows: at Robson St., call 604-689-4272; at Yew St., the number is 604-738-4272; at Hamilton, contact 604-681-4272. -Or, you may just want to visit http://hapaizakaya.com/.

Japa Dog has become a sensation in Vancouver, with a small menu of hot dogs and a variety of condiments and Asian toppings. Look for a stand at 899 Burrary St. With the priciest menu item at C$6.75, this is a great -and tasty- Vancouver experience that doesn't require a major financial investment. -By the way, it's our understanding that Mr. Anthony Bourdain really enjoyed the Kurobuto Terimayo (Japanese Black Hog sausage)! Japa Dog is open from Noon to 7:30 PM Mondays through Thursdays, from Noon to 8:00 PM Fridays and Saturdays, and from 12:30 PM to 7:00 PM on Sundays! You can visit them at www.japadog.com.

The official currency is the Canadian dollar. Currency exchange stations are available at most local hotels and airports, though many tourist destinations accept major credit cards. Most retailers will accept US currency.
