San Juan Restaurant Guide

Puerto Rican cuisine is a combination of African, Spanish and Caribbean cooking at least a half millennium in the the making. At virtually every Caribbean port, you'll find local cuisine that has its own distinct flavors, and that is derived by the fruits and vegetables common to the area, from the surrounding ocean, and from the particular cultures of people co-exist and blend there. In the San Juan area, comida criolla cooking -Spanish and Caribbean cuisine- is a definite "must try." Rice and beans are essential to these meals, as are plantains. The roadside lechoneras specialize in roasted pork (lechon), and are worth a try for you foodie dare-devils out there! Also popular is flan, which is a light, custard dessert!

Raices, at 315 Recinto Sur St., is located near the cruise terminal, and receives good reviews- especially from those patrons who have not experienced a long wait time. Prices on average are at about 20 USD, and you'll find some great local fare including Sausage in Escabeche, bacon wrapped and cassava stuffed chicken, steak * onions, rib eyes, Mahi Mahi, Shrimp, and salmon dishes, and "Mojo Isleno" preparations. Is open from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM Mondays through Saturdays, and from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Sundays. You may also want to visit http://www.restauranteraices.com/English/index.html.

La Bombonera, located at 259 Calle San Francisco in Old San Juan, has been around since 1902. Open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, this bakery and coffee shop gets great reviews for simple but tasty (and very reasonable) fare. The orange juice is fresh squeezed, and the coffee is sublime! You may want to try the mallorca with ham and cheese. La Bombonera is a great place to stop when you're visiting the old town, and just want an inexpensive but tasty treat for less than 10 USD! Their phone number is 787-722-0658, and you may also want to check out http://www.labombonerapr.com/site/Default.aspx.

When The Parrot Club opened in the 1990's, the term "SoFro" for south of Fortaleza came into existence. This place set a standard for trendy new Latin cuisine, and it is still one of the popular places to dine in San Juan. With prices between 20 and 32 USD, The Parrot Club is certainly not an inexpensive dining option. -But the cuisine, including seared tuna, chicken skewers, crab cakes, seafood dishes, and vegetarian tortes, is considered by many to be well worth the cost. Besides, during lunch or dinner at The Parrot Club, you may find yourself amongst the city's "movers and shakers!" This restaurant is open from Noon to 3:00 PM, and from 6:00 to 11:00 PM. They are located at 363 Fortaleza, and you can call them at 787-725-7370.

The official currency is the U.S. dollar. All major credit cards and travelers checks are accepted in most locations.
