When you're on an island in Italy, and you have at your disposal fresh fruits, vegetables, and nature's bounty from the sea, and your history also includes the spices and other influences from the Middle East, you get the wonderful cuisine Sicilians relish! Sardines, anchovies, and a variety of fresh fish are prepared along these traditions... and if you've never enjoyed fresh anchovies you are in for a completely delicious surpise here! Check out the panelle (pancakes made of chickpeas) and the Crochelle served by local vendors, or check in to a restaurant for pasta con le sarde. Sfincione -pizza of tomatoes, anchovies, and onion- is heavenly! Restaurants in Palermo tend to be closed on Sundays and Mondays. Lunches are long, and dinners after 8:00 PM can be as well, because these repasts are meant to be relaxed and enjoyable among friends!

Kursaal Kalhesa Michele, located at Foro Umberto I, 21, Palermo, is above a bookstore and has a terrace for those warmish nights. The fare is predominantly local Italian, and the prices are reasonable. This restaurant gets great reviews for staff service, and is open Tuesdays through Sundays from noon to 1:30 AM. Mi Manda Picone Michele, at Via Alessandro Paternostro 59, Palermo, Palermo, offers superb Sicilian entrees in what was once a stable that has since been remodeled into a place with Medieval themes. This restaurant receives accolades for their selection of local wines as well as food quality. Food is moderately priced, and you can contact them at +39 91 6160660. They are open from 07.00 to 23.00. 
 
Donna Franca Florio Michele is ensconced in the Hotel Villa Igiea Hilton, which happens to be a 19th century mansion. At the foot of Mount Pellegrino, this restaurant boasts a lovely terrace, incredible views of surrounding gardens, and entrees that do not disappoint at moderate prices. Donna Franca Florio Michele is open daily from 12.30 to 16.00, and from 19.30 to 23.30. Their address is 43 Via Salita Belmonte, Palermo.

The official currency is the Euro. MasterCard, Diners Club and Visa are widely accepted, but many small establishments - shops and restaurants only accept cash. Travellers cheques are accepted almost everywhere.
