The traditional, robust fare includes two different versions of couscous; veal with roasted vegetables; a padellata di pesce (panful of fish) with vegetables; and a full roster of house-made desserts. The extensive wine cellar offers more the 500 types of Italian wines, some of them champions of the area. Hours are: Mon-Fri 1-3pm and 8pm-midnight; Sat-Sun 8pm-midnight. The Jolly Restaurant dello Stretto has a panoramic view the ships coming in from Reggio Calabria. For starters, select an array of smoked local fish; there's nothing better on the menu. Hearty entrees such as breast of chicken with a Sicilian citrus sauce and simple dishes such as cream of fresh tomato soup with basil are local favorites. Hours are: Daily 1-3pm and 8-10pm. Reservations are recommended on Friday and Saturday. Prices are as follows: Main courses 14€-18€ ($18-$23); fixed-price menus 30€-35€ ($39-$46). Major credit cards are accepted. Part of the unique charm of Al Padrino is its rough-edged, unpretentious nature. Basic décor and tables that are hot and cramped are the order of the day, yet this establishment has managed to flourish for a quarter of a century. The kitchen produces Messinese-style food that includes a creamy homemade maccheroni; spaghetti with shrimp and zucchini; swordfish meatballs with a fresh tomato and olive sauce; and many different preparations of beef. Flavors are robust and hearty, portions large. Get ready for loud voices, an in-your-face welcome, and a small glimpse into the working-class of Messina. Hours are:Mon-Fri noon-3pm and 7-11pm; Sat noon-3pm. The restaurant is closed in August. Prices range from $10-$20. MasterCard and Visa are accepted.
