Fat Tuesdays at the foot of the tender pier is legendary in Cancun. MTV's Spring Break Show is shot at this Fat Tuesdays if that givers you any indication. There is the expected crowded bar, an excellent beach and swimming right there. Many folks from the cruise ships don't venture get any further than Fat Tuesdays. The old standards such as Carlos and Charlie's, Senior Frogs, Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood all have restaurants/bars in Cancun, but Fat Tuesday's is considered the best in this genre. However, if you would like to venture outside of the franchise comfort zone, there are many excellent restaurants.

If Japanese cuisine is your passion, check out Irori. Enjoy the show as well as the food as the chef slices and dices the night away at this Japanese-run restaurant serving sushi and many other Japanese favorites in an intimate and exquisitely decorated setting. Consider the Enchantment of the Sea made with gently seared salmon, goat chees and sweet peppers. There's also Eastern Pleasures combining salmon goat cheese, peanuts and berries served with miso and mango dressing. Prices are sushi rolls 4.10-$8.75USD, 2 nigiri $2.45-$5.70, teppanyaki meals, $8.15-$27.75. Hours are 1-11pm Mon-Sat; to 7pm Sun. La Habichuela is a regal restaurant with a lovely courtyard dining area, just off Parque Las Palapas. The specialty is shrimp and lobster in curry sauce served inside a coconut with tropical fruit, but just about anything on the menu is delicious. The seafood ceviche and tapa al ajillo (potatoes in garlic) are mouthwatering. There's a huge aquarium in the lobby to watch if you are waiting on a table. Check out the lime sorbet splashed with xtabentún, a Yucatecan anise-flavored liqueur or strawberries jubilee for dessert. Prices for main courses are $12.50-$20USD. Open for dinner. The Matachi Seaside Grill is the place to experience the best in true seaside dining. However keep in mind that this restaurant is right on the sea and being the place to experience the sea breeze also translates into no air conditioning. This restaurant is only open in the evenings, but heat may still be in issue on certain days. But for the best stone crab, attentive service and all the trappings for a truly romantic evening don't pass on this one. Try the Anti-Bouilliabaise soup, the stone crab and the lobster. Prices for main courses range from $30-$50USD. Open for dinner. Reservations are recommended. The Matachi Seaside Grill is located at Blvd. Kukulcan Km. 17, Cancun 77500, Mexico.
