Marseille Cruise Destination Guide

Marseille is the second largest city in France, and considered to be the oldest city in this country. Founded in 600 BC by the Greeks, it is also noted that Marseille and surroundings have been inhabited for 30,000 years. Paleolithic cave drawings from between 27,000 and 19,000 BC have been discovered in Cosquer Cave, and excavations near a railroad station have uncovered brick structures from 6,000 BC. -So you opportunity to experience a city and countryside deeply steeped in history are rather good. Excursions include visiting Aix En Provence (123 BC), the Seat of Intendance of Provence in the 17th and 18th century, and birthplace of Cezanne, touring Avignon, home to the world's largest gothic palace, seeing the highlights of Marseille on amazing city tours, experiencing Arles, home to Van Gogh for a year, and experiencing Cassis, inhabited by both the Greeks and the Romans. Few places in the world offer one the opportunity to experience such a wealth of culture and history as the famed Marseille!
