As the easternmost island in the Lesser Antilles, the island is rarely struck by hurricanes. It has nearly 90 km of coral reefs offshore and two protected marine parks established off the west coast. Barbados is the nesting ground for four species of sea turtles (green turtles, loggerheads, and leatherbacks) and is home to the second largest hawksbill turtle breeding population in the Caribbean.
