Getting Around Nevis

Nevis:

Charlestown is compact and easily walkable. For any locale beyond the town center, your best bet is to take a taxi.

Most taxis are minibus style and will pick up and drop off numerous people. They line up at Main Street.

Privately owned mini-buses, the island's version of public transportation, run around the island during the day on the main road. They have names like "Dem Say," "No Problem," and "Zion Train." To catch a bus, stand on the side of the road in the direction you are going and flag one down. Fares run between $1 and $3 EC.

Nevis is so small (eight x six miles) that renting a car isn't really necessary for a day visit but you certainly can. However, to rent a car or scooter, it's necessary to obtain a driver's license from any of the island police departments (Charlestown, Newcastle, Cotton Ground or Gingerland). Cost is $20 US for a three-month license. A valid driver's license from home is needed as well. If you would feel incomplete without renting a car here, Thrifty has an outpost on the waterfront.

St. Kitts:

The best way to explore St. Kitts is to take one of the island's widely available taxis. It's advisable to negotiate and agree on the price up-front since there are no meters. Minivan-style buses also circle the island all day. If you're planning to rent a car, a visitor's driver's license costs $62.50 EC ($23 US) and can be obtained at police stations and car rental agencies. Although St. Kitts' roads are wider and easier to drive than those on many Caribbean islands, it's best to go slow. Children walk to school on the roads, and people often stop their cars to talk. Note that goats, sheep, donkeys and cows have the right of way.
