Getting Around Haifa

Trains are cheap and efficient if you want to travel independently. To Akko it's 30 minutes or to Tel Aviv, 75 minutes. Haifa itself is easy to navigate, either by using the Carmelit or a taxi. Walking is a challenge because of the steep hills and pedestrian routes cut through the hairpin bends via stone staircases. If you choose to go on foot, you'll need a map.

Taxis are metered and can be hailed on the streets. They wait outside the port if a ship is in. If you can't find one around town, head to one of the big hotels where they often gather. Round the fare up when you pay -- a large tip is not expected.

Faster than normal buses are minivans, known as monit sherut or "service taxi", that generally follow major bus routes but can be hailed from anywhere on the route (not just official bus stops). They are usually somewhat cheaper and somewhat quicker than buses, their operations hours may be longer - and in many cases the sherut runs 7 days a week, including on Shabbat. For inter-city lines, if a driver is at a station he may wait until he has a full load of passengers before leaving. So unless you're with a group, or the Sherut already has a load of passengers, you might be in for a wait before you leave. Look for an almost full Sherut!

There is also a rail system in Haifa, but beware that you will most likely have to change trains, and there would be a certain amount of stress involved in getting back to the ship in time. Cruise lines will tailor-make tours to Jerusalem and/or Tel Aviv, using a private car and guide. Israel is fairly compact so pretty much anywhere north of Jerusalem would not present time issues.
