Getting Around Cartagena

Getting around Cartagena isn’t too difficult, if you have a basic idea where you are going and a general sense of how to communicate it.

Walking around in the Old City is safe, fun and scenic. However, do not attempt to walk from the port area to the Old City. The cruise ships' dock is in the industrial port area of the city and the surrounding neighborhood is not safe to walk through.

You can try to pick a bus route, but this can be tricky. Printed schedules are not easily found so it might seem like the buses are just wandering around town. Ask people waiting for the buses which one you might want to take, or, better yet, ask a bus driver when the bus stops where he’s going and if the bus will take you where you want to go. Buses are very inexpensive and will stop for you if you flag them down - even if you're not at a bus stop.

There are many taxis to choose from in Cartagena and few will charge more than just a few American dollars for a ride to just about anywhere. Even so, it is wise to agree on the price before getting into the cab. Note:  Some taxis accept Colombian pesos only – check before getting in.

Rental cars can be found at nearby hotels and the airport. Of the major rental companies, only Hertz and National Car Rental have offices in Cartagena; however other local companies are represented. Special Note:  Renting a car in Cartagena can be quite expensive due to security issues and poor road conditions; not to mention the streets are very crowded. Driving outside the city limits is not recommended unless you are familiar with the roads and the route to your destination. There are major security concerns for foreign travelers in Colombia. Bottom line, renting a car in Cartagena may be more trouble than it's worth.

There are also scooter rentals available in Cartagena, but the same aforementioned reasons for not renting a car apply to renting a scooter as well.

Water taxis, which are generally speedboats, are available at the port area in Cartagena. You can journey over to one of the beautiful beaches of the Rosario Islands by way of water taxi. Be aware that the boats go extremely fast, the waves can be high and the ride is usually fairly bumpy.

In Cartagena there are also good old-fashioned horse and cart rides. Drivers wait with their horse and cart for prospective passengers at the Santa Clara Hotel and at the Plaza Bolivar. You can also flag down a driver when you need a ride.
