Skagway Shore Excursion Guide

Cruise lines offer a number of shore excursions for sale when visiting Skagway. For your convenience, we have provided a sample listing below of the shore excursions typically sold by cruise lines that visit Skagway. You may wish to check out 3rd party shore excursions in Skagway to get a wider variety of options to choose from.

White Pass Scenic Railway

On this 40 mile round trip journey, you'll be traveling on that unique and historic narrow gauge railway to and from White Pass Summit. You'll pass local highlights including Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, and Dead Horse Gulch, and see the Klondike Trail carved by fortune seekers in 1898.

Price: Adults expect to pay around $120.

Booking Advice: This excursion lasts around 3 and a half hours and has a low physical exertion level. If money is an object and you just want to see the summit, there are coach tours for almost 75% less.

Original Street Car Tour

A street car guided tour takes you to the Scenic Overlook, the Gold Rush Cemetery, and other Skagway highlights. This 2 hour tour also includes a recounting of a gunfight involving the infamous “Soapy Smith,” and a viewing of the “Skagway Story” documentary.

Price: Adults expect to pay around $39.

Booking Advice: This tour is not physically taxing and budget friendly. However, it's fairly easy to navigate this little town on your own.

Helicopter Tours

These 2 hour tours take you on a helicopter flight into the wilderness where you'll have an opportunity to hike on a glacier.

Price: Adults expect to pay from $279 to $320.

Booking Advice: Helicopter tours are rated as moderately taxing physically because hiking is involved. You'll want to check age requirements, physical restrictions, and (of course) wear warm attire for that hike. Check 3rd party vendors for lower rates for “flightseeing” tours.

Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float Excursion

The 2 mile hike climbs and descends Saintly Hill on a trail that was a mainstay during the Klondike Goldrush (2) years. It's now a lovely trek through rain forest. The float portion of this adventure involves no white water as you move from verdant forest to beach shorelines.

Price: Adults expect to pay from $112 to $129.

Booking Advice: Third party vendors do offer lower prices for this excursion. Expect moderate to difficult physical exercise due to the walking involved. You will likely sight some wildlife, but this is not guaranteed.

Liarsville Gold Rush Camp & Salmon Bake

The higher cost Liarsville excursions also include a train ride, and last about 6 hours, but all tours visit Liarsville, regale you with tales of the Klondike gold mining days, and offer all you can eat of salmon and other main entrees including grilled chicken with a nice variety of side dishes. Liarsville Salmon Bake tours that don't include the train trips cost $63 through the cruise lines, and last about 2 hours.

Price: Adults expect to pay from $63 to $240 through the cruise lines.

Booking Advice: If you just want the Liarsville Salmon Bake & fun, we do suggest considering third party vendors who offer this activity at significant savings. This tour is considered to be easy with regard to physical exercise.

Third Party Shore Excursions in Skagway

3rd party shore excursions often have advantages over shore excursions sold by the cruise lines. Third party shore excursions can be less costly and feature smaller groups than shore excursions sold by the cruise lines. Often, the vendors you buy from directly are the same vendors used by the cruise lines themselves.

The benefit of buying shore excursions from the cruise line is that the vendors and pre-screened for safety and reliablity. While cruise lines shore excursions can be more expensive than buying direct from a local vendor, there is certainly peace of mind that the cruise line will be using a reliable, safe and trusted vendor. If you experience a problem with the vendor on a cruise line-sold shore excursion, the shore excursion managers onboard the cruise ship will likely be an invaluable resource to help settle disputes.
