Florence/ Pisa Tours
Tours of both Florence and Pisa typically last about 10 hours, and, unless you have opted for an on your own tour, these excursions often provide lunch and admission prices when necessary. On your own tours are the least expensive. The pricier, more exclusive excursions typically have two important galleries on the agenda... the Uffizi Gallery (housing sculpture and works of art by Da Vinci, Giotto, Boticelli, and Ciamabue), and the Accademia Gallery (features many works of Michaelangelo). These tours also include highlights such as the 15th century Piazza Duomo Cathedral, the Piazza Della Signora, the Palazza Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio and St. Croce (burial place of Machiavelli, Galileo, and Michaelangelo), and the Leaning Tower of Pisa among other monuments in the Piazza dei Miracoli.
Price: Adults expect to pay from $99 to $345, depending upon tour agenda.
Booking Advice: While these tours do offer a good way to explore many treasures in Florence and Pisa, you'll find shorter tours to specific places of interest in the same areas via online third party vendors for far less money per adult. Such tours likely do not include lunch, however, and may not pay admission prices to all the places you might have on your wish list. Tours in Florence and Pisa typically require much walking on uneven surfaces, so these are typically rated as physically difficult.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa
Building the Leaning Tower of Pisa began in 1173, but construction came to a halt for almost a century when the tower began to lean. Also considered to be the place where Galileo conducted velocity experiments, this tower has attracted tourists globally for ages. Most tours do include time to stroll and guided tours of the exteriors of other highlights, such as the Cathedral and Baptistery.
Price: Adults expect to pay $79 to $105 for tours that last about 3.5 hours.
Booking Advice: Depending upon whether or not you scale the tower's 294 stairs, these excursions are typically rated either easy or physically strenous. For tours to specific highlights in Florence and Pisa, you'll find that online third party vendors offer very competitive prices.
Wine Tasting in Tuscany
Whether or not you're a big fan of the vine, you're about to see some of the most beautiful, pastoral countryside in Italy. If you are an oenophile, and chianti is a favorite, missing a tour in the Toscana region is akin to forgetting to eat for a day. These tours, lasting from 4 to 9.5 hours, take you to the beautiful countryside and to a winery, where you can sample the product with salami and bread. More expensive tours typically offer this excursion in combination with a gallery visit, tend to be full day excursions, and usually include lunch.
Price: Adults expect to pay from $63 to $169, depending on the excursion length and agenda.
Booking Advice: Half day and full day Tuscany and wine tasting tours through online third party vendors tend to be less expensive, and in our opinion these are worth your consideration. Many half day tours are rated as easy in terms of physical exercise, while full day excursions are often considered to be physically strenuous due to the walking involved.
Cinque Terre, or the “five lands,” consists of 5 coastal villages protected as a national park. You'll experience Italian culture, architecture, and charm unique to these villages of terraced houses, town buildings, and vineyards. You'll visit Manarola and see the “Street of Love,” experience Vernazza after a boat ride to this town, and then see Monteroso al mare, which is most famous for its history. Lunch is not always included in these tours.
Price: Adults expect to pay from $129 to $132 for 9.5 to 10 hour excursions.
Booking Advice: Cruise line excursions to Cinque Terre appear to be quite competitive with online third party vendors. These tours are considered to be physically strenuous, no doubt due to the walking involved... These towns are literally terraced on the bluffs by the sea.
Established as a Roman colony in 180 AD, Luca still has original Roman roadways. Highlights of this tour include seeing the Piazza dell'Anfeatro which includes remnants of an ancient Roman amphitheater, the Romanesque 12th century Church of San Michele in Foro, the Piazza Sam Martin, and the 11th century Lucco Duomo. Anyone interested especially in history and architecture will likely love this tour.
Price: Adults expect to pay around $50 for these 4 hour tours.
Booking Advice: These tours are considered to be moderate in terms of physical exercise. Cruise line prices appear to be competitive with those of third party vendors.
