Ketchikan Shore Excursion Guide

Cruise lines offer a number of shore excursions for sale when visiting Ketchikan. For your convenience, we have provided a sample listing below of the shore excursions typically sold by cruise lines that visit Ketchikan. You may wish to check out 3rd party shore excursions in Ketchikan to get a wider variety of options to choose from.

Ketchikan City Tours by Trolley

Trolley tours last from 45 to 75 minutes, and give you an overview of Ketchikan. You'll likely see Whale Park, and the historic area that includes the old and infamous Creek Street red light district that features Dolly Arthur's brothel from the 1920's to the 1950's.

Price: Adults expect to pay from $25 to $30.

Booking Advice: Creek Street tours are quite popular! These city tours are generally rated as easy in terms of physical exertion, and combine up well with other local attractions, such as the Lumberjack Show. We do suggest that you look over tour prices, because occasionally those combined tours are actually a bit higher than two complete tours (such as the Lumberjack Show and a trolley tour).

The Lumberjack Show

This show is one of the “Travel Channel's Top 10 Things To See in Alaska,” and it's very affordable and kid friendly. The competitions between lumberjacks (sawing, climbing, etc) are quite entertaining, and the background information about the lumberjacks of Alaska provides a bit of education as well.

Price: Adults expect to pay around $35.

Booking Advice: This activity is rated as easy regarding physical exercise. The $35 fee for adults is the cost you'd incur if you purchased your ticket independently. You'll also have time for shopping & snacking.

Misty Fjord Seaplane Excursion

When you're visiting a 2.3 million acre monument consisting of fjords, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, and forests, experiencing such majestic wonder by seaplane is most fulfilling. These tours generally last about 2 hours, with 75 minutes of actual airtime.

Price: Adults expect to pay from $249 to $266.

Booking Advice: These are very popular excursions so we do suggest booking early. This activity is rated as easy regarding physical exertion. Cruise line prices for this particular seaplane adventure are very competitive.

Bear Watching

These 3 to 5 hour excursionstake you to Neets Bay, a remote location in Tongass National Forest, where you'll have opportunity to spot black bear catching salmon. You'll probably want to bring your camera. Flights to the national forest involve a quarter of a mile hike to the bay, where you watch the bears from a stand. When cruising to the area, you view the bears from the boat. Flight excursions take around 5 hours, and boat trips last about 3 hours.

Price: Adults expect to pay from $229 (boat excursions) to $379 (seaplane excursions).

Booking Advice: Flight excursions are typically rated as moderately difficult, and boat cruises are considered to be easy in terms of physical exertion. Because these bears are not in a zoo, no one can guarantee sightings. Cruise line prices are very competitive for these excursions.

Rainforest Island

After you reach this island in the Tongass National Forest, you'll see coastal rain forest that you'll reach by a secluded beach. Some of this is “old growth” forest. You're cruise on the inflatable motorized Seahawk through Clover Passage may afford you sightings of seabirds, seals, eagles, whales, and sea lions. These 4 hour excursions might include a snack.

Price: Adults expect to pay from $99 to $129.

Booking Advice: Because of the walking involved, these adventures are rated as moderate in terms of physical exertion. You'll probably want to bring your camera!

Third Party Shore Excursions in Ketchikan

Below are links to third-party shore excursion vendors in Ketchikan. These links will launch in a new browser window and are external sites. We bear no responsibility for the content or services offered at these sites.
3rd party shore excursions often have advantages over shore excursions sold by the cruise lines. Third party shore excursions can be less costly and feature smaller groups than shore excursions sold by the cruise lines. Often, the vendors you buy from directly are the same vendors used by the cruise lines themselves.

The benefit of buying shore excursions from the cruise line is that the vendors and pre-screened for safety and reliablity. While cruise lines shore excursions can be more expensive than buying direct from a local vendor, there is certainly peace of mind that the cruise line will be using a reliable, safe and trusted vendor. If you experience a problem with the vendor on a cruise line-sold shore excursion, the shore excursion managers onboard the cruise ship will likely be an invaluable resource to help settle disputes.
