You will have the opportunity to shop for truly unique items while in Cape Town. Greenmarket Square, an open-air market on the cobblestone streets in the central business district is an extremely popular place to begin shopping. Just around the corner from the Greenmarket Square is the Pan Africa Market which also has many unique shops and restaurants. End your shopping with a stop at the Red Shed Craft Workshop where it is very common to have local artisans offer custom creations as you wait.   • Many of the vendors accept major credit cards but it is highly recommended that you keep a small amount of Rand for spur-of-the-moment purchases. • Bartering is not a generally accepted norm in the formal sector.
  • The price you see is the price you pay. All prices include a 14% Value Added Tax and can be claimed back when leaving the country.

The currency used in South Africa is the South African Rand. Many shops and hotels accept traveller cheques. Major international credit cards such as American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard, Visa and their affiliates are accepted in South Africa. The majority of shops in Cape Town accept credit cards as South Africa has a generally modern banking system. Cash needs to be payed for goods bought at informal markets and roadside hawkers.
