Valparaiso Self-Guided Tour

Here are some popular sights and attractions you may want to check out if you choose not to do a shore excursion and explore Valparaiso on your own:

  • Plaza de Armas
Plaza de Armas is a square of palms and fountains that was laid out by Pedro de Valdivia, the Spanish Conquistador who founded the city in 1541. It is the historic heart of Santiago, lined with handsome Spanish Colonial-style buildings, including the City Hall, Natural History Museum, the Post Office, and the Metropolitan Cathedral, the city's most opulent church.
  • Museum of Pre-Columbian Art
The Museum of Pre-Columbian Art is Santiago's most outstanding museum. Here you'll find a fantastic collection of carvings in wood and stone, ceramics, pottery, and textiles from the early inhabitants of South and Central America and Mexico, especially the Andes tribes. The museum displays roughly 3,000 items.
  • Constitution Square
Constitution Square is Santiago’s most formal square located about six blocks from the Plaza de Armas. It is home to statues of heroes and of the Palacio de la Moneda, the presidential palace. Plus, the changing of the guard takes place every other day at 10 a.m.
  • Santa Lucia
Santa Lucia is located at the edge of downtown. The lushly landscaped Cerro Santa Lucia is a triangle-shaped hilltop named by Valdivia. According to some, it was the spot where he founded Santiago and named it after the crown of Spain. The hillside was transformed as part of an effort to turn Santiago into a European-style city in 1872. The idea was to provide gardens, squares, and terraces where fashionable residents could stroll and enjoy the panoramic view.
