San Juan Self-Guided Tour

Here are some popular sights and attractions you may want to check out if you choose not to do a shore excursion and explore San Juan on your own:

  • Plaza Arturo Somohano
Plaza Arturo Somohano is a park popular with artisans, who design and sell hand-made crafts.
  • El Morro
El Morro, also known as El Castillo San Felipe del Morro, dates back to 1539 when a small, turret-like tower was built by the Spanish settlers to defend the bay of San Juan. El Morro was attacked several times during the course of its history and was at the center of battles against Sir Francis Drake, George Clifford, and Ralph Abercromby.
  • San Cristobal Fort
San Cristobal Fort was built in 1664 on 27 acres of land. It was constructed to protect San Juan from land attack and it’s the first fort that you will see when driving into Old San Juan. San Cristobal is declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations today.
  • Old San Juan
Old San Juan is a 465-year-old neighborhood originally constructed as a military stronghold. Its 7-square-block area has turned into a charming residential and commercial district. The streets here are paved with cobbled adoquine, a blue stone cast from furnace slag. The city includes over 400 restored 16th- and 17th-century Spanish colonial buildings. Visitors can also enjoy Old San Juan’s gambling casinos, beautiful beaches, and tropical climate.
