Funchal Self-Guided Tour

Here are some popular sights and attractions you may want to check out if you choose not to do a shore excursion and explore Funchal on your own:

  • Levada Walking
Levada Walking are a series of trails that were former irrigation ducts built by slaves who were imported into Madeira in the 15th and 16th centuries. They developed the unique and vast network of irrigation ditches all over the island to bring water from the highest points to the lowest. Thanks to modern technology, the ditches are no longer used for their original purpose, but they have been preserved as hiking trails.
  • Cable Car to the Monte
Ride up to the Monte in a modern cable car. It’s a 15-minute ride at an incline of approximately 1,800-feet. Traverse up and over the old town of Funchal and the Ribeira de Joao Gomes valley. Then you’ll be deposited in the charming town of Monte, which features gorgeous views over the south coast of Madeira.
  • Mercado dos Lavradores
Mercado dos Lavradores is the Old Town "Worker's Market" in Funchal and it’s open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. during weekdays and on Saturday until 2 p.m. The market offers a real look into the life of the typical Madeiran. Mercado dos Lavradores is comprised of a fish market with the local espada fish, a craft market, and a flower market.
  • Tea at Reid’s Palace
Take afternoon tea at Reid's Palace, a 115-year-old sprawling pink marvel located at the edge of town. It is one of the great historic hotels of the world. Set on 10 acres of lush cliffside, the hotel offers a very British high tea in the afternoons. Settle onto the terrace in one of the wicker armchairs and gaze down upon your cruise ship as you sip proper English tea, snack on delicate, crustless sandwiches, and take little bites of Madeira cake.
