Charleston Self-Guided Tour

Here are some popular sights and attractions you may want to check out if you choose not to do a shore excursion and explore Charleston on your own:

  • The Historic District:
The Historic District depicts the Charleston of yesteryear, covering the city in its Colonial and Antebellum eras. You can take one of the carriages that leave from Church and N. Market Streets for a 45-minute ride with an entertaining guide or simply stroll the streets on your own.
  • Fort Sumter:
Fort Sumpter is where the Civil War began and it sits at the entrance of Charleston Harbor, a battered reminder of the furor and folly that so characterized the Civil War. The tour of Fort Sumpter lasts a little longer than two hours and includes a narrated harbor cruise, as well as admission to the monument itself and the services of the knowledgeable National Park Services guides.
  • South Carolina Aquarium:
The South Carolina Aquarium is located just next door to the Fort Sumter National Monument building and is ideal for families with small children. There are a variety of exhibits, including otters, fish, sharks, turtles, jellyfish, and even a bald eagle. The aquarium’s newest attraction is an albino alligator.
