Buenos Aires Self-Guided Tour

Here are some popular sights and attractions you may want to check out if you choose not to do a shore excursion and explore Buenos Aires on your own:

  • Buenos Aires' neighborhoods
Free guided tours of various Buenos Aires neighborhoods are offered by the tourist offices just about every day. Though Buenos Aires is a sprawling city that covers approximately 80 square miles, the "microcenter" of Buenos Aires that includes the historic, cultural, and business center, is within an easily walkable area. The "Micro Center" section extends south from the elegant Plaza San Martin, along which many hotels are located, to the Plaza de Mayo, the historic center of government. Calle Florida is a pedestrian-only street that connects the two areas and is an international mecca for shoppers.
  • The Tango
A Tango show is a must for anyone visiting Argentina! The Argentines have perfected the Tango to its most seductive and romantic. Small, intimate tango bars can be found throughout the San Telmo and La Boca districts, but the larger shows frequented by tourists at places like La Ventana, Casa Blanca, Senor Tango, or El Viejo Amacen, are also fabulous spectacles. If you are inclined to learn the dance, spots such as Club Almagro and La Estrella offer lessons and guarantee to be a fun experience.
  • Recoleta
Recoleta is the chicest neighborhood in Buenos Aires. It is lined with handsome apartment buildings and many fine shops, art galleries, and restaurants. It sprang up around the Recoleta Cemetery, where the ancestors of the city's aristocracy are buried. Begun in 1822, this amazing cemetery is a virtual crypt city of tall, ornate tombs and mausoleums covering four square blocks. It is easily one of the city's most visited attractions. The monument most sought after is the simple dark marble crypt belonging to Eva Peron, the wife of the late dictator Juan Peron and the heroine of the city's working class, as she was one of their own before her rise to power. Ironically, she rests among the very families who once despised her lower-class origins. A colorful craft and souvenir market takes place on weekends around the plaza Intendente Alvear, just below the cemetery. The event is made even livelier by scores of street performers. A stroll past the many designer boutiques on elegant Av. Alvear or a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, Argentina's largest museum, are other great ways to spend time in Recoleta.
  • Plaza de Mayo
Plaza de Mayo is the city's stately historic center that includes the Metropolitan Cathedral, dating back to the 18th century. The plaza also has a host of stately buildings including the Casa Rosada, the pink palace where Eva Peron addressed adoring crowds from the balcony. The May Pyramid, which is guarded by tall palm trees in the center of the square, commemorates the 1810 revolution.
