Tampa Restaurant Guide

When your Southern city is by the ocean and you have Ybor City with Cuban cigar making origins in your midst, it's really a safe assumption to expect decent seafood, dynamite Cuban and Spanish cuisine, and "down home" excellent fried chicken. You can diet here if you want to, but in the words of one waitress, "It's time to break the plate on that idea!" Translation? Forget dieting, you're on vacation! You are also in a town which can truthfully boast the oldest restaurant in Florida and the nation's largest Spanish restaurant!

Columbia Restaurant began in 1905 when Casimiro Hernandez, a very thankful Cuban immigrant took his hard earned savings to create a bar that served soup, sandwiches, and coffee. He named his establishment Columbia, to thank America, from the then popular song, "Columbia, Gem of the Ocean." -And from that very good beginning, a fantastic restaurant grew! Considered to be the oldest restaurant in Florida, Columbia serves an amazing list of entrees! There are Sopas, including gazpacho and Cuban Black Bean Soup, a wonderful selection of salads, 2 pages of Tapas at lunch and at supper, and lunchtime sandwiches including Moho Chicken, Mahi Mahi, and Meatloaf at lunch. Main courses include Ropa Vieja (means old clothes), which is shredded beef with platanos and rice, Paella Espanola, and a great selection of seafood and chicken dishes as well. Prices are reasonable. Lunch entrees typically range from 5 to 12 USD, and dinner fare is from 8 to 18 USD. Columbia Restaurant has a menu for children, and has gluten free selections, too. This venerable venue is one of Tampa's treasures, and the food is remarkable! This restaurant is open from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM Mondays through Thursdays, from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM Fridays and Saturdays, and from Noon to 9:00 PM on Sundays. Columbia has 7 locations in the Tampa area, but we highly suggest that you visit the first, which is located in Ybor City at 2117 E. 7th Ave. Reservations are suggested, and you can call them at 813-248-4961 or visit http://www.columbiarestaurant.com/.

Channelside Bay Plaza is within walking distance of you if your ship is at Cruise Terminal #3. You'll find shopping venues, and a variety of dining options from quick to fancy for your selection there. You may want to visit http://www.channelsidebayplaza.com/.

Love's Artifacts Bar and Grill, at 4914 S. MacDill Ave., began after the owner began to sell barbecue from a section of the family's car dealership. Now, the restaurant is IN the car dealership which is also decorated in a homey kind of kitsch. Ten dollars is all that's required to eat some of the best fried chicken of your life! For dinner, you can get a nice meal with drinks for around 30 USD. Sides like fried green tomatoes and garlic mashed potatoes are just incredible. The barbecued ribs are definitely worth a try. Jalapeño poppers stuffed with peanut butter are also available for the daring! This restaurant is open for lunch and dinner everyday but Monday. You can call Love's at 813-831-3273, but no reservations are required.

Ballyhoo Grill, at 7604 Ehrlich Rd., receives some well earned praise for their fare, which includes their home-made sauces. Starters including oysters on the half shell, sliders, pot stickers, edamame, and nachos range from 5 to 13 USD. A variety of soups, salads, and flat bread sandwiches are also available from 5 to 13 USD. Burgers and a selection of pasta dishes range from 8 to 15 USD, and the grilled chicken, steak, and fish selections typically range from 14 to 22 USD. On this menu, the table side guacamole and those grilled fish selections are highly recommended. This restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. You can call them at 813-792-1500, and visit http://www.ballyhootampa.com/.

The official currency is the U.S. dollar. All major credit cards and travelers checks are accepted in most locations.
