Stockholm Restaurant Guide

When wondering what to try in terms of local cuisine in Stockholm, you can nix the "Swedish Pancakes" as traditional breakfast fare. Try "smorgas," instead. This open faced sandwich with butter and cheese can be topped with cold cuts, tomatoes, and cucumber, and is very much a tradition. Crisp bread spread with a fish pasts is also popular among the local people. Reindeer meat, including reindeer burgers, are well liked, and there are a variety of potato dishes that include the mashed variety. Salmon and herring entrees are definitely worth trying as well! Lingonberry jam is quite tasty, and if you like experimenting a bit, you may want to experience Cloudberries on your ice cream!

Popular Restaurants in Stockholm:

At Operakallaren, enjoy an excellent meal in their magnificent setting, overlooking the royal castle. Elaborately carved ceilings, incredible chandeliers, gilded wood panels, golden mirrors and wall paintings all finely paired with classic French décor plus subtle hints of contemporary twists set an impressive scene at Operakällaren in Stockholm's 19th century Royal Opera House. It would not be exaggerating to say that Chef Stefano Catenacci's cuisine is "fit for a king," as he has presided over many banquets and special events for Sweden's royal family and has also been awarded a star in the Guide Rouge (formerly the Michelin Guide). The set menu presented at Operakällaren has eight courses with optional wine pairings, as well as à la carte offerings such as steamed halibut with morels and white asparagus cooked in grapefruit broth; glazed quail breast and consommé "en gelée" flavored with star anise and foie gras parfait; venison drizzled in blackcurrant jus; and Russian tea sorbet with a refreshing orange mousse. The extensive wine cellar houses more than 30,000 bottles from around the world and features rare vintages. This restaurant has received a star in the Guide Rouge (formerly Guide Michelin). Starters range in price from $37 to $46.50, main courses are from $39.50 to $70.95, and the tasting menu is about $150 (USD). Once known for fitting in with the 'trendy gourmet' crowd, Wedholms Fist still remains as one of the premier restaurants in all of Sweden. If you like fish and seafood, this restaurant set by a bay in the center of Stockholm is simply a 'must-go.' High ceilings, large curtainless windows, and tasteful modern paintings from the owner's personal collection and other Swedish artists create a spacious, sophisticated space. The cuisine, which consists almost exclusively of seafood, can be both imaginative traditional to simple traditional -- ranging from chèvre mousse accompanied by a simple tomato salad to grandmother's cream-stewed potatoes. The menu is divided by type of fish, with a number of options for each type. The chef has reason to boast of such creations such as perch poached with clams and saffron sauce, prawns marinated in herbs and served with Dijon hollandaise, and grilled filet of sole with Beaujolais sauce. There are also incredible 'starts' such as marinated herring with garlic and bleak (a freshwater fish) roe, or tartare of salmon with salmon roe, and decadent 'endings' such as homemade vanilla ice cream with berries. The owner Bengt Wedholm is known for his high standards and has been awarded a star in the Guide Rouge (formerly Guide Michelin). Prices for lunch main courses range from $36 to $46 USD. Dinner main courses are from $57 to $109 USD, and the 5-course tasting menu is around $159 USD. All major credit cards are accepted. Hermans is a regular haven for vegetarians out to get the most out of their kronor. The consistently great food is always served buffet style and includes various vegetable and pasta salads, warm casseroles, and such entrées as Indonesian stew with peanut sauce, stuffed vine leaves, crunchy potato wedges, Moroccan-inspired salads and vegetarian lasagna. The fruit pies and other desserts are always fantastic. Prices, from $15 to $21, are very budget friendly! Major credit cards are accepted. Their hours are from11am to 9pm, and to 11pm June to August. This venue is located at Fjällg. 23A, Södermalm, Stockholm, 116 28, Sweden.
