Singapore Restaurant Guide

There are various "dining districts" in and around Singapore filled with restaurant choices. Singapore cuisine has Far Eastern, Indian and Malaysian influences and the dishes are usually quite spicy. A regional specialty is Singapore noodles, a spicy dish made from curry and noodles. The Boat Quay, which consists of old houses converted to restaurants, is great place to find ethnic restaurants serving different types of Asian food but there is also a wide selection of trendy restaurants, many of which have a more European flare. The most famous bar in Singapore is the Raffles Hotel's Long Bar, where the "Singapore Sling" cocktail was invented. There are also a half a dozen pub-style bars within walking distance from port.

Harry's Bar is the official after-work watering hole for finance professionals from nearby Shenton Way, Harry's biggest claim to fame is that it was bank-buster Nick Leeson's favorite bar. But don't let the power ties put you off. Harry's is a cool place, from airy riverside seating to cozy tables next to the stage. Harry's is known for its live jazz and R&B music, which is always good. Of all the choices along Boat Quay, Harry's remains the classiest; even though it's also the most popular, you can usually get a seat. Harry's holds an appeal for Singapore visitors as well. Menu items include: Beef Fajitas, Spicy Chicken Pasta, Portobello Mushroom Burger, Southern Dory Fillet, and Grilled Vegetable Sandwich. Upstairs, the wine bar is very laid back, with plush sofas and dimly lit seating areas. Prices range from $12 - $23/entrée + $3 for drink or the set menu - $12. Au Jardin is located in an elegantly restored colonial house in the middle of Singapore's lush Botanic Gardens This establishment has received much praise for its fine French cuisine with an Asian twist. The ambience is simple yet elegantly understated. Chef Galvin Lim, along with his team of chefs, regularly creates new menus, keeping in mind the tranquil setting of the Botanic Gardens. Nothing but the freshest and best ingredients is used in every dish, and special attention is taken to strike a balance between the various flavors and textures. Chef Galvin Lim's dedication is evident in each of his culinary creations as he tantalizes the palates of all who enter Au Jardin. Menu items include: fricassee of asparagus with smoked bacon, joselito ham with melon, shrimps with lobster sabayon and laksa mint, and carpaccio of squid with horseradish and pickled vegetables.
