San Diego Restaurant Guide

Californians just know how to eat! French, Mexican, Spanish, Italian Filipino, Vietnamese, and Pacific Islander cuisine are among the many types of food you can enjoy in San Diego area. This city is not hard to navigate by car at all, and there are certainly areas -such as the Gaslamp Quarters- where strolling about is a great idea. In a city where there are so very many fine restaurants, we'll point out just a few. Suffice it to say that when you're in San Diego, it will be easy enough to dine quite well with just a little thought and planning!

Popular Restaurants in San Diego:

Anthony's Fish Grotto has more than one restaurant in the San Diego area, which makes it a local chain. (The one we visited is at 136 North Harbor Drive.) Open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Anthony's has been serving food in San Diego since 1946. In the eyes of some, the place might be cliché, and it's quite easy in California to say that you can find more authentic, less "tourist trappy" places. However, from personal experience, at Anthony's you will find a wide selection of entrees at moderate prices (for seafood). Appetizers such as crab stuffed mushrooms, crab cakes, fresh clams, and oysters on the half shell range from 10 to 17 USD. Shellfish entrees including shrimp scampi, Alaskan King Crab, and grilled shrimp are priced from 19 to 46 USD, and there's a substantial list of salads at your fingertips. House seafood specialties and combination plates range from 16 to 26 USD, and there's a short but nice list of steak and chicken main courses from 16 to 40 USD. Lunch choices range from 10 to 16 USD. The menu does a reasonable job of offering many of the standards people look for on a seafood restaurant menu, and you'll likely enjoy what you ordered even though the selections do not necessarily reflect innovations in culinary art. If you're new to the area, enjoy your seafood, and want tasty cooking with a great view, Anthony's is a good choice. This restaurant can be contacted at 619-232-5103, or you may want to visit http://www.gofishanthonys.com/grottomenu.html.

Trattoria La Strada, located at 702 5th Ave., Gaslamp Quarter, is considered to be one of the 10 best Italian restaurants in the country. This trattoria is elegantly appointed, and there's a romantic ambiance no doubt enhanced by the beauty of the Gaslamp Quarter. Prices are fairly moderate, with antipasti choices from 4 to 11 USD. The salad selections and the minestrone zuppa are also in this range. Unlike trattorias in Italy, this menu only reflects the Primi and Secondi courses, but the selections for both, including Farfallin al Salomne, Spaghetti alla Bolognese, Filetto al Chianti, New York all Griglia, and Ossobucco Vittello range from 11 to 30 USD on the lunch menu and do not disappoint. The dinner menu is significantly more expansive, offering veal, meats, seafood, and chicken main courses and a nice selection of pastas from 14 to 40 USD. All classically fine trattorias deserve this rule of thumb: good things do take time! That said, relax with your wine and bread, and enjoy! Trattoria La Strada is open from 11:30 AM to 11:00 PM Mondays through Thursdays, and Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 AM to 1:30 AM. You can call for reservations at 619-239-3400, or visit http://lastradasandiego.com/.

Prado, situated in the center of Balboa Park at 1549 El Prado, Suite 12, manages to do something many places have only attempted with innovative cuisine that celebrates foods from Asia and Italy, and no one need forget Latin influences whatsoever! The cuisine is a bit pricey, with entrees starting at 25 USD, but the experience is well worth every penny! Look for Kobe Beef Sushi, Grilled Skewers, and Sea Cakes among other delights on this wonderful menu! Prado is open for lunch from 11:30 PM to 3:00 PM Mondays through Fridays, and from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Saturdays and Sundays. Dinner begins at 5:00 PM Tuesdays through Sundays. You can contact them at 619-557-9441, or visit http://cohnrestaurants.rtrk.com/?scid=1384641&kw=8919206:19701&pub_cr_id=407881510.

The official currency is the U.S. dollar. All major credit cards and travelers checks are accepted in most locations.
