Mumbai features an assortment of dining experiences sure to fit any budget. Venture out of your comfort zone and taste Indian dishes at their best. Don't forget to try the seafood.

Popular Restaurants in Mumbai:

As you enter the Khyber, it's like stepping back in time – a Frontier theme with big wooden doors, oil lanterns, white-marble floors, terra-cotta urns and weathered wood. The opulent interior decor includes original fresco murals by some of India's most famous painters: Anjolie Ela Menon and M. F. Husain. To further the Khyber experience, the waiters come dressed in Pathan (North-West Frontier) garb to serve up your chosen dishes from their vast menu. Some of the signature dishes of the Khyber are: kali mirch rawas (fish seasoned in black pepper); pomfret green masala (fried pomfret fish stuffed with tangy green chutney); Khyber raan (leg of lamb marinated overnight, then roasted in a clay oven); and paneer shashlik (grilled Indian cottage cheese, spices, and vegetables). Indigo is a modern, fine-dining restaurant which pairs old-world charm with decadent food and fine wines. Started in 1999 by Rahul and Malini Akerkar in a restored colonial bungalow, Indigo greets its visitors with warmth, style and an almost palpable aura of hospitality. The menu is vast and changes once a year. The Sunday brunch is legendary and is made complete with live jazz music and free-flowing Indian liquor. The lunch menu is simple yet complete with soups, salads, sandwiches and main courses - all quite mouth-watering. Trishna is considered a "do not miss!" restaurant by close to all who have eaten here. The interior decor is rather plain and ordinary (some go so far as to call it "unstylish"), however, the food is the reason folks flock to Trishna. Seafood is the specialty, with king crab, lobster, jumbo prawns and various types of seafood tandoori, but there are also plenty of meat and vegetarian choices on the menu as well. Butter pepper garlic king crab is Trishna's signature dish, but you'll also find pomfrets (fish) and tiger prawns (prepared as the guest specifies) cooked to perfection. Recommended dishes include pomfret hyderabadi-style (a local fish barbecued with a coating of freshly ground black pepper), it's a true masterpiece; pomfret hariyali stuffed in green masala and baked in a tandoor; fish sholay kebab; spicy Kolhapuri prawns; or squid - expertly prepared with butter, pepper, and garlic. To ensure you have a table, make certain you call in a reservation – Trishna stays full year-round! Prices for main courses are Rs 150-Rs 620 ($3.50 - $14 USD). Fish is sold by weight; crab/lobster/prawns Rs 550-Rs 2,500 ($12 - $55 USD). The average price for 2: Rs 4000 ($88 USD). All major credit cards are accepted. Reservations are essential for Dinner. Hours are Monday to Saturday: Lunch: Noon- 3:30PM and Dinner: 6:30PM- Midnight. Sunday: Lunch: Noon- 3:30 PM Dinner: 7:30PM- Midnight. Wasabi by Morimoto is rated as one of the world's top 100 eateries. This is by far Mumbai's top Japanese restaurant – and definitely a place for fans of celebrity chef Masahuru Morimoto, aka "Iron Chef." Seafood of top quality is flown in from around the world for the extensive sushi and sashimi menu (which features sea urchin, flying fish roe, sweet shrimp, jackfish, and fatty tunny), and there's also an extensive vegetarian selection, something not usually available in Japanese restaurants. For a bit of "the wow factor" right at your table, order the ishi yaki "buri bop" -- a yellowtail dish prepared on a hot stone right in front of you. Other menu items needing special mention are the miso marinated black cod and the Chilean sea bass in black bean sauce, ginger and shaved scallion. Don't neglect to try the wasabi crème brûlée - you'll be glad you did. Prices are Sushi/sashimi Rs 325-Rs 500 per piece, Rs 2,050-Rs 3,945 assorted, Sushi mrolls Rs 500-Rs 750, Main courses Rs 825-Rs 1,575, Teppanyaki Rs 875-Rs 1,550. All major credit cards are accepted. Hours are Daily: 12:30PM- 2:45PM & 7PM- 11:45PM Wasabi by Morimoto is located at Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Apollo Blunder, Colaba, South Mumbai, Maharashtra 400001. Resevations are required for Dinner. Their phone number is 022/6665-3366.
