Haifa Restaurant Guide

The Haifa dining experience runs the gamut from sublime to elegant. Small intimate places are not hard to find. Signature dishes are abundant.

Popular Restaurants in Haifa, Israel:

Hanamal 24 is the one true gourmet restaurant in Haifa that is housed in what was previously a warehouse located in a grungy, dark part of the port area, near the railroad tracks. But don't let the exterior fool you! Once you get inside, you find yourself in a magnificent dining space divided into smaller areas that create an intimate and cozy feel. The restaurant combines gourmet food, rustic Italian design, and an atmosphere of abundance. The menu is constantly changing which allows executive Chef, Ran Rosh, to consistently offer amazing new signature creations. Fresh shrimp served on a bed of hummus infused with lime or forest mushrooms stuffed with goat cheese, garlic, and pistachios make great starters. The main courses change daily, but always include a choice of perfectly prepared lamb, poultry, meat, fish, and seafood. Desserts are splendid, and the wine list is good. Prices for main courses range from NIS 150-NIS 300 ($23-$33). Prix-fixe luncheon and dinner specials are offered. All major credit cards are accepted. Hours are: Monday to Saturday; Noon – Midnight. Reservations are required. Hanamal 24 is located at 24 Hanamal St, Haifa. You'll need a taxi to get here, but it will be worth the effort. Their telephone number is 04/862-8899 and their website is http://namal24.rest-e.co.il/.

Jacko's was named after the retired fisherman that started this basic, no-frills restaurant serving fresh fish prepared without pretense. Although Jacko and his family are no longer there, you still get a sense of their friendly spirits. Jacko originally came from Izmir, on the coast of Turkey, and the Sephardic-Aegean touch still permeates first course dishes such as the Turkish-style "paella" or in the meze of little salads that comes with your main course. The sesame shrimp and the shrimp sautéed in wine and garlic are always fresh and tasty. Don't neglect to ask the waiter about the catch of the day and the daily specials. Prices for main courses range from NIS 70-NIS 100 ($18-$25). All major credit cards are accepted. Hours are Sunday to Thursday; Noon- 11:00PM,Friday; Noon- 5:00PM and Saturday; Noon – 6:00PM. Reservations are recommended. Jacko's is located at 12 HaDekekim St, Haifa, Israel at Paris Square. From the Carmelit stop at Paris Square, walk 2 blocks down S. Nathanson Street and take a right into the market. From here, anyone can point out the place to you - this place is a Haifa institution. Their phone number is 04/866-8813.

Abu Yusuf's dishes lean toward the Lebanese-side of Middle Eastern cuisine, featuring kubbeh, falafel, hummus with meat, grilled heart (delicious), and roast chicken. With your order of a main course, you are entitled to one trip to the amazing salad bar which contains 20 Middle Eastern dishes - or you can make the massive salad bar alone your entire meal. Be sure to treat yourself to fresh pita bread and a shot ("jot") of anise-flavored arrak brandy. Abu Yusuf specialties dishes are fresh fish and grilled lamb. Prices range from the Middle Eastern Salad Bar at $3USD to main courses atb$10-$25. Hours are Sat-Thurs 9am-midnight; Fri 7am-4pm. The 1872 Hashmura Restaurant occupies a restored German Colony mansion built in 1872. The menu features main courses of seafood and pasta, but the source of great pride is the meat. Lamb ribs with baked potatoes in a heavy, rich lamb stock; beef filet Rossini topped with goose liver and Portobello mushroom, served with creamy potato rissoles; or breast of mullard in cardamom sauce. Don't forget to check out the dessert list. Prices for main courses range from NIS 65-NIS 115 ($16-$29). Fixed-price lunch is available on weekdays noon-5pm) from NIS 75 ($19). Hours are noon-midnight daily and reservations are necessary. Major credit cards are accepted. The 1872 Hashmura Restaurant is located at 15 Ben Gurion Blvd., in the German Templar Colony.
