Portugal has all the promise of epicurean heaven. Naturally, situated as it is by the coast, seafood plays an important role, with stews such as cozido (cabbage and fresh fish), and entrees of conger eel, red mullet, sole, lobster, and stuffed crabs. Pork and grilled steak are also quite popular, as are cheeses and sweets. If you enjoy wine, you've come to a great country!
Popular Restaurants in Funchal/Madeira:
With no other restaurant like it on the island, both local and visiting meat-lovers flock to Beef & Wines
for a fabulous "come away stuffed" meal. If you've ordered the picanha (beef on a skewer), the waiters bring it to your table and slice the amount you'd like…and do this again and again until you cry "uncle!" The meat is cooked to perfection if you like it done medium to medium-well, however if you like beef very rare or very well done, the staff will accommodate you by preparing it in the kitchen to your specifications and serve it to you separately. There are starters and sides, but the advice from the experienced picanha crowd is to start out slow. Outstanding desserts and an excellent wine list round out Beef and Wines. Some see the attentiveness of the waiters as great service, while others see it as pushy. Just know that your every need will be taken care of and offers for more of something may continue even after you've declined. Hours are from 12:00–2:30PM, and 7:00–11:00 pm. This restaurant is located at Rua Avenida do Infante 60 A, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, which can be reached via: Funchal (493 m SE) Funchal - Las Palmas, Funchal - Portimao, Funchal - Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas. Situated at the end of Rua do Dom Carlos, O Tapassol
sits close by the promenade overlooking the mouth of Funchal's harbour at the beginning of the 'restaurant row' of Rua de Santa Maria. (Don't let the advances restauranteurs touting for business put you off – it is a custom that is offensive to some, but if the establishment is not a place you've considered dining, just smile and move on.) O Tapassol is a welcoming and colourful two-story venue. The waiters, all immaculately uniformed in black trousers, white shirt with distinctive red and white candy-striped waistcoats, are multi-lingual, professional, witty and charming. The menu is extensive serving items such as: the Fish of the Day (Sea Bream, Dourada, Red Snapper etc), Espetada (marinated garlic beef, cooked to perfection and trimmed from a skewer at your table), a Lamb dish served in a delicious gravy, Lapas (grilled limpets served from the oven in a shallow hot pan), and Scabbard fish and Grilled Sardines. Typical side dishes are: fresh vegetables including sweet potato, butternut squash, carrots, green beans and fried maize.
