Charleston Restaurant Guide

One thing's for certain: the folks in Charleston do know how to eat! Low Country cooking has influences from the Gullah people, who are African and Caribbean descendents. If you suspect some seafood and rice dishes, you're very much in the right! Fried Oysters, Lobster Savannah, Hoppin' John (black-eyed peas & rice, nicely spiced & flavored with salt pork), shrimp fixed a number of ways and even served for breakfast, and Frogmore Stew might be entrees you'll see in places serving traditional fare. If you love seafood, "not to be missed" are the "raw bars" you'll find in the Carolinas! Let's face it... You're in the south, by the sea, and in a place where people love their cookin.' Life rarely gets better than that!

Popular Restaurants in Charleston:

Bowen's Island (1870 Bowen Island Road, 843-795-2757, www.bowensislandrestaurant.com) is not fine dining - this is a loud, share your table, wear your flip flops and enjoy the beach food-type joint!! Charleston low-country seafood at its very best and one of the best seafood values, too, Bowen's Island is a real institution and not to be missed. The restaurant had a fire in late October 2006, but was completely rebuilt and back in business within months. Bowens Island restaurant is famous for its locally harvested oysters, fried shrimp, hushpuppies, Frogmore stew, cold beer, and its undisturbed view of river, marshes, islands, and wildlife.
