With settlements pre-dating the Greeks in 8th century BC, Messina grew in fame as a strategically important port, and as port used by Crusaders. William the Good, King of Sicily, was in fact Richard the Lion heart's brother-in-law. Regarding an infamous claim to fame, Messina is also attributed to being the port from which the Black Plague spread.
