Lisbon, Portugal is one of the oldest cities in Europe, one of the largest European ports, and the westernmost European capital. It has long been globally recognized for its extensive and distinguished maritime history as well. In 1755, Lisbon was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake. Only the Amalfi District survived that catastrophe. Thus the mixture of architecture very much the old and the new, with Gothic, Moorish, and neoclassical designs abounding.
